Going Street Art Crazy in Canggu, Bali

I’ve said this many times before on this blog, but I’m a huge fan of street art. When I travel to any new city, one of the first things I typically google is “street art in [insert city here].” I’ve hunted down street art in a bunch of different cities throughout my travels, from the cobblestone streets of Bogotá to the rough and tumble alleys of Phnom Penh. That’s why I was surprised it took me so long to realize that Bali is home to some amazing street art.

When I arrived in Bali, in the beginning of July, I was a tad overly-excited when Aaron told me that there was going to be an actual street art festival being held in Canggu (a town in Southern Bali) mid-month. And while there was no way my schedule would allow for me to attend the actual festival, I knew that the second I arrived in Canggu I was going to hop on my motorbike and find some street art.

During the weeks leading up to my arrival in Canggu at the end of July, I made sure to keep my eye on Instagram – which has become one of my favorite travel resources – to see what sorts of pieces were being put up around town.  I quickly learned that this wasn’t just your average street art fest, the 2016 Tropica Festival actually attracted some seriously talented and world-renowned artists from both Indonesia and abroad, including Darbotz, Quint , Seth and so many more.

Now that I’m here, I can assure you that there is some seriously great street art in Canggu. So, if you’re headed to Bali anytime soon, make the short trek from Seminyak to Canggu, rent a motorbike and cruise around town. I assure you you’ll be rewarded with some truly great street art.

Here’s a little guide on how to find some of the amazing street art in Canggu:

Nelayan Beach, Canggu:

I’m a huge fan of the street artist, Seth. So I was really excited when I found out he’d participated in the Tropica Festival. He put up three pieces (that I know of) at Nelayan Beach in Canggu. Simply head down to the beach, turn left and you’ll see them scattered along the beach. You can’t miss ’em!

Quint also has a small piece in the area!

On the road to Finn’s Beach Club:

There’s a small stretch of road leading up to Berawa Beach and Finn’s Beach Club that has tons of street art all around. Just head toward the beach on Jl. Raya Semat which turns into Jl. Pantai Berawa and dead ends into Berawa Beach.

Here are just a few pieces that I spotted while driving on that road. If you just start a few kilometers up from the beach, you should see all of these.

On the road to Echo Beach:

If you’re in Canggu, you’ll likely beeline it to Old Man’s at Echo Beach. About a kilometer up you’ll find a few other pieces including an enormous mural on the side of Echo Hostel.

I’m sure there’s plenty more street art in Canggu, but at least this should give all of you street art enthusiasts out there an idea of what’s here.

Where to stay in Canggu: Canggu is pretty known for its great villas, so I opted to rent a little studio apartment while staying in Canggu called The Apartments Canggu.

  1. Hey! I found your blog yesterday night and by now I’ve read it almost all! I’m moving to Indonesia next week so thank you for all the related posts cause I found them really useful! I’m gonna live in Surabaya which is relatively close to Bali and I really cannot wait to visit it! Would be so nice to meet you one day since I’m also planning to move to San Diego one day! Warm hugs from Poland!
