Dubai Travel Planning Tips

Exchange rate: At the time of writing, the exchange rate is AED 3.67 to USD $1.

Arrange an eSIM: Airalo is my go-to when purchasing eSIMS for my travels, and they have plenty of different eSIM options for the UAE. Use my promo code AIRALOESIM10 for 15% off!

Getting to/from the airport: For a metered taxi at the airport, just follow the taxi signs to the official taxi queue. To save more, you can take the metro to and from the airport.

Top 3 affordable activities: Ride an abra across Dubai Creek (AED 1-2), see the Fountain Show over dinner and drinks at Time Out Market (AED 37+), or get bird’s-eye views from the Dubai Frame (AED 52).

Cheap things to do in Dubai for under AED 30

Cruise across Dubai Creek on an abra

Dubai Creek is lovely.

Riding an abra (a traditional wooden boat) across Dubai Creek is one of the cheapest things to do in Dubai. Not only do you get to feel the wind in your hair while you glide past the heritage buildings in Old Dubai‘s Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood, but this mini-cruise costs next to nothing.

Price: AED 1-2 (27¢-54¢)

Hang out at Ripe Market

Ripe Market is kind of an expat secret. But if you want to get a feel for how the city’s many expats spend their weekends, a visit to the Ripe Market in Academy Park is one of the coolest cheap activities in Dubai.

This bohemian marketplace features homegrown products created by local artisans and entrepreneurs. You’ll find booths selling everything from home decor to clothes, jewelry, food products, and more. It’s a wonderful place to shop local.

You don’t have to buy anything if you don’t want to, but you never know what kinds of bargains you’ll find. There are plenty of food trucks on-site, too, selling globally-inspired dishes on the cheap, as well as live entertainment. All in all, it’s a fun place to hang out for a few hours.

Do note that the Ripe Market in Academy Park is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from October to May. Follow them on Instagram @ripemarket to find out what will be happening during your visit.

Budget-friendly tip: You can take the metro to the “Mall of the Emirates” metro station and walk to Academy Park. That way you won’t have to pay for a taxi.

Price: Entrance is AED 5 ($1.35)

E-Scoot around the Dubai Marina

When it comes to fun and cheap activities in Dubai, why not rent a scooter for a half hour or so and cruise around the iconic Dubai Marina? You’ll find Lime e-scooters all over the place in the Dubai Marina area. They cost AED 3 to unlock and AED 1 for every minute you use them.

The 7.2-kilometer Dubai Marina Walk runs all the way around the marina. You’ll find plenty of cool attractions along the way, from cool street art and art installations to beautiful mosques and postcard-worthy scenery. If you do rent an e-scooter, please mind the speed limit and drive carefully. There are lots of pedestrians and kiddos on the Marina Walk!

Travel around the world at Global Village

Dubai is home to a lot of over-the-top attractions and Global Village is one of them. Part theme park, part cultural ambassador, Global Village is all about showcasing cultures from around the world through food, performances, and shopping.

The entrance fee is modest and you can spend as little or as much money as you want once you get inside. But once you pay to enter, it’s entirely free to walk around the international pavilions (like Turkey, Japan, and Thailand), enjoy the fireworks shows, and see the cultural performances. Some of the “street food” is pretty affordable, too!

Price: Entrance is AED 25 ($6.80) for weekday tickets and AED 30 ($8.15) for any-day tickets. Check prices on Klook.

Cheap activities in Dubai for under AED 95

Eat and drink at Time Out Market

When it comes to affordable things to do in Dubai, spending some time in Time Out Market is always a fun idea. Explore this hip food hall in Downtown Dubai and you’ll find 17 unique food concepts, including three bars.

While it’s not the cheapest place to eat and drink in town, it’s completely possible to have dinner or drinks for under AED 55. For example, get a “bespoke” cheeseburger for AED 33 at Pickl, a shawarma at Liban by Allo Beirut for AED 25, or a margherita pizza at Pitfire for AED 49. You can also grab affordable draft beer for AED 35 and cocktails for AED 55 at the Fountain Bar.

Other perks of hanging around Time Out Market are that you can get excellent views of the Dubai Fountain Show from the outdoor terrace. Plus, there are always free live music performances and pop-up events happening at this local hangout!

Take a guided tour of Jumeirah Mosque

Touring Dubai’s many mosques is always a great way to tap into this country’s history and culture. And luckily, the beautiful Jumeirah Mosque offers guided tours for just AED 35, making it one of the most affordable things to do in Dubai.

The mosque is part of the “Open Doors. Open Minds.” program, which means that non-Muslims are welcome to tour the mosque, take photos, and ask questions. As part of the tour, you’ll also be treated to refreshments.

Tours are typically offered at 10 am and 2 pm from Saturday to Thursday for AED 40. Tours are not offered on Fridays. Do note that modest dress is required and women should bring their own headscarf.

See old and new Dubai from the Dubai Frame

There are so many epic viewpoints in Dubai. But the cheapest way to get panoramic views of the city is from the top of the Dubai Frame. You’ll find this unique attraction in the lovely Zabeel Park. It’s an attraction in its own right and a great spot for a budget-friendly picnic when the weather is nice.

The Dubai Frame is 150 meters tall. Once you’re at the top, you’ll have the chance to walk along the 100-meter-long glass bridge while taking in epic views of Old Dubai on one side and the modern Dubai skyline (including the Burj Khalifa) on the other side. It’s a really cool way to see just how much the city has changed in the past 50 years.

Price: AED 52 ($14) for adults. Check prices on Klook.

Find cheap eats at Mall Food Courts

This might sound a little odd. But don’t underestimate how good (and diverse!) the food courts are in Dubai’s Malls. Malls are a big thing here in Dubai and you’ll find massive ones all over this city – and with a massive mall comes a massive food court!

Of course, Dubai Mall is the most well-known and has tons of affordable options in the food court. But if you’re into authentic Chinese food, head to the food court in Chinatown (just opposite the Dubai Ice Rink in the mall), and you’ll find a dozen or so Chinese stalls hawking everything from steamed dumplings to spicy dan dan noodles.

Malls like Dubai Hills Mall and Mall of the Emirates also have fantastic offerings in their food courts, with cuisines ranging from American fast food chains to Indian buffets, Mexican burritos, Lebanese shwarma, Japanese ramen, and so, so much more. You should be able to eat very well for under AED 35-55, if not quite a bit less.

See the Dubai Fountain Show from a boat

Taking place on Burj Lake, right outside of the Dubai Mall, the Dubai Fountain Show is completely free to watch. However, for less than AED 75 ($20), it’s possible to get up close fountain views on a traditional abra (wooden boat) ride.

These 30-minute boat rides allow you to sail around the blue waters of Burj Lake while taking in unreal views of what is the world’s largest choreographed fountain show. Oh, and did I mention you’ll get neck-craning views of the Burj Khalifa too? Because you most definitely will!

Price: AED 70 ($19) for adults. Check prices on Get Your Guide.

Get thrilling Burj Khalifa views from Sky Views Observatory

If you want to go to the top of the Burj Khalifa, it’s going to cost you. But for a fraction of the price, why not take in views of the world’s tallest building from a nearby skyscraper?

Taking in the views from Floors 52 and 53 of the Sky Views Observatory in the Address Sky View Hotel is easily one of the best cheap things to do in Dubai. You’ll get incredible views from this vantage point at 219.5 meters in the sky. For even more thrills, you can pay a bit more and slide down the translucent “Glass Slide.” Located on the side of the building, the slide takes you from the 53rd Floor to the 52nd Floor!

Price: Starting at AED 80 ($22) for the observation decks. Extras are optional. Check prices on Get Your Guide.

Get cheap eats in Satwa

Dubai’s restaurants can be ridiculously expensive but get out of the tourist hubs and you’ll find that eating here can be fun, delicious, and affordable! For some of the very best cheap eats in the city, make your way to 2nd December Street in Satwa.

This is where you’ll find the best street food in the city, which comes at shockingly reasonable prices. This is Dubai, so you’ll find a wide range of cuisines here – from Indian, Lebanese, and Persian to Afghani, East Asian, and Southeast Asian.

For a casual sit-down meal, Ravi is a longtime local favorite for cheap Pakistani eats, while Al Mallah is one of the best Lebanese restaurants in the city. But really, it’s just well worth wandering around the area and seeing what hidden gems you can find!

Take a Dubai Marina yacht tour

The Dubai Marina is magical at night.

It doesn’t get more Dubai than sailing through the Dubai Marina in a luxury yacht. While it does sound extravagant, these cruises are surprisingly affordable. There are loads of different boat cruises on offer in the Dubai Marina, but one of the coolest is this Dubai Marina Yacht Tour.

It runs for 2 hours and you can choose your preferred time slot. Sunset is always a winner and evening tours are pretty magical as well. You’ll sail through the marina and head out into the Arabian Gulf past Ain Dubai (the world’s tallest Ferris wheel), Palm Jumeirah, both Atlantis hotels, Burj Al Arab, and other iconic landmarks!

Price: Starting at $27 for one person, with options to add on extras like BBQ lunch or dinner. Browse your options here.

Go Insta-crazy at Dubai Miracle Garden

You’d never expect to find a flower-filled wonderland in the middle of the desert. Yet here it is!

With over 50 million colorful blooms, the Dubai Miracle Garden is a feast for the eyes. This place was tailor-made for Instagram. You’ll find all sorts of flower-studded displays spread across 18 acres of land, with the flower-encrusted Emirates Airbus A380 plane, the Heart Tunnel, the Disney Princess Castle, and the Smurf Village being some of the top attractions.

Price: Starting at AED 95 ($26) per adult. Check prices on Klook.

Get cheap(er) booze at an Alcohol Store

Going out for drinks in Dubai is a pricey affair. It seems at minimum a happy hour beer or cocktail will put you back AED 37. So if you want to get drinks to have in your hotel room or apartment, you’ll want to stop by one of Dubai’s designated alcohol shops.

Buying alcohol in Dubai is a bit confusing for newcomers. You can’t actually purchase alcohol at a grocery store or convenience store. Instead, you’ll need to hunt down a branch of MMI or African + Eastern. Here you can find wine, beer, and everything in between for much less than you’d pay at a bar or restaurant. Here’s my guide on how to buy alcohol in Dubai.

Bucket-list activities that won’t break the bank

See the Palm from above

This is a true bucket-list activity.

If I had to recommend just one viewpoint to pay for in Dubai, it has to be the observation deck at The View at The Palm. Not only is this my favorite viewpoint in the city but it costs far less than going to the top of the Burj Khalifa.

General tickets allow you to take in bird’s-eye views of Palm Jumeirah from the 52nd Floor of Palm Tower. You can also pay a bit more to access the more exclusive observation deck on the 54th Floor. This observation deck not only sees fewer visitors but it’s open-air, allowing for better views and better photo ops.

Price: General Admission Tickets are AED 110 ($30) for non-prime hours and AED 165 ($45) for prime hours; the Fast Track Admission Level 52+54 Tickets are AED 185 ($50) for non-prime hours and AED 240 ($65) for prime hours. Check prices on Get Your Guide.

Budget-friendly tip: For extra savings, book during the non-prime hours, which usually run from 8 am to 3:30 pm.

Take a spin on the world’s tallest Ferris wheel

As one of the top bucket list activities in Dubai, you would think riding the Ain Dubai would cost a small fortune. But this activity is actually surprisingly affordable given how epic it is!

The Ain Dubai is the largest and tallest observation wheel in the world. With a height of 250 meters, it makes the 167.6-meter High Roller in Las Vegas and the 126-meter London Eye look like child’s play.

One revolution on the Ain Dubai takes a whopping 38 minutes. During your journey, you’ll get some of the best views in Dubai, including bird’s-eye views of the Arabian Gulf, the Dubai Marina skyline, and the Palm Jumeirah.

Price: Starting at AED 145 ($39) per person, with options to add on premium and VIP extras. Browse your options on Get Your Guide.

Budget-friendly tip: The cheapest way to ride the Ain Dubai is to go during non-prime hours, which run from 10 am to 4 pm & 7:30 pm to 8 pm. Basically you’ll pay around AED 50 ($15) more to ride during the prime hours of sunset.
